Maruti Dzire Beats SUVs To Become India’s Best Selling Car For A Full Year
Written by: Kailash Jha
Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire ended FY26 as India’s highest-selling car, recording around 2.3 lakh wholesale dispatches between April 2025 and March 2026. In a market dominated by utility vehicles (around 66% of total passenger vehicle sales), this achievement is quite remarkable.
The Dzire consistently outperformed popular SUVs like the Tata Nexon, Tata Punch, Hyundai Creta, and Maruti’s own Brezza over the 12-month period, maintaining an average of just over 19,000 units monthly.
Dominating a Shrinking Segment
Despite the shrinking sedan market, Maruti’s share of sedan sales has grown from 45.8% in FY2017 to 57.2% in FY26, primarily driven by the Dzire. In February 2026, the Dzire recorded 19,326 units, capturing a staggering 54% of the sedan segment that month.
The Price and Fuel Equation
The Dzire’s appeal is tied to its competitive pricing (Rs 6.26 lakh to Rs 9.31 lakh ex-showroom) and efficient running costs. Powered by a 1.2L petrol engine with manual or automated manual transmission, it offers a claimed fuel efficiency of over 22 kmpl. Maruti also provides a factory-fitted CNG variant for further cost savings.
Maruti states that demand for the Dzire is balanced between fleet and private buyers, making it versatile enough to serve as both a commercial taxi (Tour S model) and a personal family car.
